- Overview:
Tabs on the Web Is a Mac CGI
program that makes it EASY to put up a simple searchable index of just about anything
onto the web, your corporate intranet, anyplace there is a Mac. It will let you
maintain these records remotely via the web.
If you have a copy of your corporate phone extensions stored in Excel that you
print out each time there is a change and give out to everyone, then Tabs on the Web
is a perfect solution! This is the example we're going to build in this demo.
All pages returned are based on templates that you can fully customize for your
application.
- Personal Requirements:
Working with this program requires a basic knowlege of HTML and forms, but no
other database or programming skills are necessary.
- Hardware Requirements:
This program will work with all the major Mac web servers, and also Personal Web
Sharing that ships with every mac. So you dont need anything else to use this
than what came with your machine.
- What it isn't:
TOTW will take a tab delimitted file and turn it into a searchable
web page. The number of records it can handle is limited only by the memory available
and the speed of your machine. I can easily handle 2000+ records on my 180Mhz
603e powerbook, so a modern Mac should be able to handle many thousands of records
without a noticable performance hit. It is not a shopping cart app, it will not
connect to an Oracle database, it will not do your dishes or select tomorrows
outfit for you.
The entire database is cached in memory, so if you are importing a large amount of data
watch the freememory bar and consider giving TOTW more memory.
- How do I get help?
TOTW Is shareware and inexpensive so I cannot offer telephone or realtime support. There is a low volume
mailing list dedicated to helping people with settup and configuration and with any problems you might have. There is a
link to join from the TOTW Homepage. I will offer support and help
through this mailing list.
